ELE VOLTOU! (click here for english version)

Felizmente, no Brasil, tivemos todo o jogo traduzido, incluindo as notícias televisivas.

ENGLISH (because the text length, will be reviewing it gradually)

It is not the intention of this blog talking about the news of the world Odyssey, for that we have the grand "Odyssey² Homepage" and the "Forum Videopac". But two days ago, to open my e-mail box almost fell of the chair to see the return of one of the new e-mails as well written, Ed from Odyssey2. Seriously ... Wow! Yes, himself, the famous Ed Averett. More than a programmer, Ed is the embodiment of Odyssey. The purpose of our blog is mainly showing some projects I'm working on and undoubtedly Ed Averett was the guy who inspired me to write games. In the post this week without further ado, I make a brief analysis of each of the games created by Averett, as inspired me and what brought novelty:

Take the Money and Run: An educational game that teaches children to steal! It is a milestone in the history of the console. Before Take the Money, the Odyssey was  just more one console, offering the same games as competitors, commonly sports games (BTW: good games for period). Here, Ed shows that came with the intention of presenting new ideas, which, in my humble opinion was the one that gave identity to our beloved console. It is worth mentioning that the Odyssey is rarely remembered for their versions of Frogger and Super Cobra, although I consider the barbaric Turtles translation, better even than the arcade in terms of gameplay, which made the Odyssey a single console was your library of exclusive games. I do not intend to talk much about the gameplay. It is true that some ideas, magnificent in the role not yielded good games. But without try the new, the wheel simply does not rotate. I always tried to study the concepts behind the Ed games and other programmers who came after. Conceptually, this game brings cool. First he puts players in an unknown world, sometimes players will hunt, others will be hunted down, have a chance to win or lose, or very little. Another interesting detail in the game is to get the player has to make a greater effort to make more or where the rounds will be hunted, make a greater effort to not have losses. Finally, another new feature in the game is the use of key "action" for an unusual action at the time: bow your head!

I´ve Got Your Number: This is an educational title for the children of preschool. So do not expect fun with this title if you are not part of the target. Although it is difficult to talk about this game is interesting to note that once again, Ed brings an unconventional idea. A giant blackboard with giant numbers swirling, seems to have left the  Wonderland!

Invaders Form Hyperspace: From  Wonderland numbers born solar systems twins: Terien and Lorien. This game brings a lot of cool ideas within a single screen. In particular the possibility of landing a planet that is under his control. Also, it runs the risk of being temporarily unable to participate in the game, if destroyed without any domain. The manual version proposes a "single player" where the player must try to win as many planets. I think that if the game had this focus, this would be the first masterpiece of the console. Many current strategy games bring elements that seem to have come out of this game.

Showdown in 2.100 A.D.: At this time many consoles tried to recreate, in its simplest form, the Outlaw game, Atari. Averett stepped forward. While in Outlaw, opponents moved in half the screen. Duel allows the player to walk across the screen, but the best are the trees planted in the middle of the screen. They give the game a number of strategies. I used to be good at making the bullet bounce off the trees. Limit the number of bullets was a nice balcony and added a dramatic aspect to the game. A classic!
War Of Nerves: Just as Invaders Form Hyperspace  I see War of Nerves as an embryo of the current RTS. This game is conceptually brilliant. But once, the famous button "action" is used in unconventional way. Through it their commander can call your army and therefore make them change their route. With some training and use of the territory you can make your army surprised the enemy or even surround the opponent general.
Alpine Skiing: What draws attention in this game is that it is the only of this was to allow two players could play the game at the same time. What makes me think, even on the basis of previous releases (and later), Ed Averett bet that video games should bring people together.
Hockey/Soccer: Okay, I do have two worldly passions, classic video games and Rock N 'Roll. Odyssey AC / DC are at the top of their lists. So my favorite band released one fiasco called Ballbreaker, Ed gave us this game. everyone makes mistakes, Indoor Soccer / Hockey failed.
Volleyball: This was a title that only added to my collection after the arrival of the internet and its auction sites. I was able to play it a unique ve against a human opponent and surprisingly enjoyed ourselves a lot. As a novelty, and the opportunity to control the six players simultaneously, the game of difference is that when playing against the machine, this will be adjusting to the opponent's level. In fact the "computer" struggling to lose the game, still a legal innovation 8 ^). This game is also the first of the sports series to enable the player to play against "computer"
Electronic Table Soccer: This game is not about a soccer game (In Brazil the title of this gam sugest it was a soccer game, instead a table soccer game), but an electronic version of what here we call Pebolim or Toto. The big news this game, plus a A.I improved compared to the previous title is the way Averett extends the control possibilities of use. Thanks to this large balcony the player can control separately the goalkeeper, the midfield and the attack. As a fan of new concepts and mechanics, I loved the idea, and I intend to use it and expand it in my game Air Attack (if you can complete it)
Pocket Billiards: The pool merit is that perhaps this is the first game of the genre for consoles. Your physical is not the best but it does for fun, even when the ball does not go where it should go (diversity, especially when it is the turn of the opponent)
Pachinko: Another idea out of Wonderland, this time Averett, rather than creating a traditional Pachinko, decided to put two O2man within a Pachinko machine. While my logical side thinks a traditional Pachinko would be even more fun, my side eager for news says: That's it, Ed!
Casino Slots Machine: Only a slot machine game. Although contemporary slot machines seem to have followed a pattern with three windows, Ed bet on a machine with nine windows, proclaimed in our manual as "a" replica of authentic bandit ". I do not know the universe of casinos to understand what it means and this game taught me to keep me away from them. Perhaps the intention here was to show that the Odyssey could generate more than 4 figures (sprites) on the screen.
Blockout/Breakdown: Okay, the second game is "toast" then fine. Interestingly, the Odyssey box showed two screenshots with different background colors (a lighter green, the other darker), as both games were graphically different. Well, it is not our purpose here to discuss this and the second game is toast, speak only of the first: Blockout! As I like and always try to learn about the history of the Odyssey, I believe that at one point was asked to Averett that the next releases were based on arcade hits. Here Ed Averett shows us a new facet, the ability to innovate, transforming a popular game into something entirely new. Blockout is clearly based on Breakout arcade, but while that the player had only to destroy walls, Blockout goes beyond the player in alternating shifts, must destroy or build your wall. Applying mechanical control similar to Electronic Football game, the player controls when the defense, individually, the four "little devils", each responsible for a sector of the wall. Blockout is not only became one of the console´s most memorable games for not being a game based on increasing score (a black background also helps 8 ^)), yet it is one of the coolest concepts created by Ed Averett.
Alien Invaders Plus: Just like its predecessor, this game was based on a popular arcade in this case: Space Invaders. Just like its predecessor, this game brings some really cool ideas. The most striking is undoubtedly the homunculus coming out of the ship, unprotected when this is reached. And while I may be fooling, Alien brings something very close to the concept of battles with "Big Bosses" do not remember another game, at least when it comes to consoles that has brought this concept before.
UFO: Inspired by Asteroids, UFO brings what was missing in his two predecessors: an increasing score. Again Averett managed to create a differentiated mechanical definitely showing that the Odyssey could have flown higher, if properly treated. Also new in UFO, especially when it comes to home consoles is the ability to write the name on the screen. Creating more useful to unexplored differential - the alphanumeric keypad - giving utility to inconveniences "quads" and above all creating something that has become a signature, which was later used in other games, brought to Europe and even came to appear in computers like the MSX and C64, the default 0000 ?????? As I wrote in 0000. Skiing In The Alps, I think Ed Averett games created so that people could have fun together. Although UFO is a game for one person, the fact that he give only one life to the player, it makes the games are fast, allowing a group of friends can play them without much waiting.
Monkeyshines: According to my knowledge, this game is the first attempt to bring the Odyssey something similar to the popular Donkey Kong. Monkeys Me Mordam, in a way, moves away from the classic concept of arcade and is in some ways a preview of what's to come. This game reinforces the idea that Averett created games to be played together, which expands the possibilities of the alphanumeric keypad. Perhaps Monkeys Me Mordam is a landmark when it comes to interaction of the players with the environment. But who actually give a show in this game is the behavior of monkeys. Spectacular for a game released in the early 80s.
The Quest For The Rings: I recently found a list of the top 100 videogames games of all time and with great joy found among them the "Quest," a well-deserved honor who has always tried new concepts and reaches its apex in this game, that had been awarded at the time of its release. The Quest For The Rings inaugurates Master Strategy Series that combines video games with board games. A new experience! The game also allows, and perhaps the first time, the player to choose characters with completely different powers and weapons. More the player could choose the locations of the search: Masmorrras, Hell, Crystal Caves or Moving Walls, each of the environments with distinct characteristics. "Rings" was as much in the question interaction. The game allowed up to five players, one of them in the role of "Ringmaster" preparia any challenge Heroes, and may intervene in the game with possessions. "Pursuit" is probably a first attempt to bring the universe to RPG video games and it is interesting that Averett was not limited just to put different sprites in the game but gave each of them a different behavior. Try to pass under the Spydroth and you will understand what I say!
The Conquest Of The World: The second game of the  anthology Master Strategy Series, worthy of honorable mention as "Best Mult-Player 1982" by the magazine Electronic Games (source: The Odyssey2 Homepage), is inspired by the RISK game, which is also a of my favorite board games. Although the game videogame party has based on the known game Combat, the ability to choose different weapons increases the possibilities strategies and can select them according to the opponent to face.
The Great Wall Street Fortune Hunt: Voted "Most Innovative Game of 1982" Electronic Games (source: The Odyssey2 Homepage), maybe Wall Street has sought inspiration in Monotony (the pun is intentional), but move away from the simplicity of this. Actually come to think that Wall Street has been trying to reach a more adult audience, given its complexity. Anyway, once again, we have an unconventional concept. The game screen showing the latest news and market prices and through it, the player should take their buying and selling decisions. Fortunately, in Brazil, we had the whole game translated, including television news. Wall Street ends the bright, most awarded and most memorable series of games released in the Odyssey. Other games were referred to as The Sherlock Holmes (prototype found) and an exclusive for Odyssey³, something like Football Manager, but I think Ed would not be involved in these projects.
K.C Munchkin: If the Strategic Series makes the Odyssey is well remembered. Come Come2, not so much. The game, inspired by the iconic Pac-Man was sued for plagiarism. From what I understand, my recent interview, Ed Averett, at the request of Magnavox, designed some prototypes based on Pac-Man ('d love to know these ideas) that were refused because they wanted something very close to the yellow dot and the result was KC Munchkin . The fact is that KC approached very Pac Man, humiliated the Pac-Man released for 2600 which resulted in process and consequent withdrawal from the market of the product. Though, should agree to the proximity between KC and Pac Man, the positive aspects of the game just dazzled. With KC Munchkin, perhaps, albeit timidly, has emerged the concept of the mascot. Perhaps, KC was the first video game character to have a second adventure. Finally, it is the first game to allow the player to create their own game environment. Another great idea!
Freedom Fighters: Based on the classic arcade Defender and with some influence of Robotron innovation in this game is the use of two controls, allowing the player to make two different types of flight. The game could also be played by two people, one as a driver and the other as co-pilot. In fact, I can not tell you how much this proposal is functional, but the fact is that without it Defenders would just be a generic shooter, with no differential.
Pick Axe Pete: My first contact with an Odyssey was through this game. Pete follows the Donkey Kong line, but in my opinion Averett got a whole new and better game. One of the great balconies Pete is your unique mechanics, the arms of the character indicate the action to take place, unlike their source of inspiration, Pete could give various kinds of jumps and dives, some more and Pete could even participate in the Mortal Kombat ! Another unique aspect of the game is how the levels evolve. Usually, at this time, the evolution of levels in the games was given the increa atrave's to speed. In Pete, visited every new mine, part of the mine "crumbling" which made the next totally unpredictable level. Incidentally, this unpredictability meant that Pete was an even more fascinating adventure game. Popular games like Pitfall, for example, brought predetermined actions in Pete each level functioned as a real adventure, you never knew what he would find, from which arise the rocks, not to mention the risk of entering a dark mine. The game also featured several options mine, my favorite is # 4! Absolute classic.
K.C´s Krazy Chase: In Brazil, perhaps by the legal problems faced by our friend KC, this title came first and was here, the flagship of the console at the time of its release. Cookie Monster in addition to distance himself from Pac Man, enough to avoid new process, again brings the ability to create our own mazes (and imprison drats 8 ^)). Ed is also the first game to use the new accessory "The Voice" giving more life to our mascot and immortalizing his laughter.
Attack Of The Timelord (with Linda Averett): Probably inspired by games like Galaga, although without bringing big news, the Timelord was the shooter missing the console. The movement of ships is fantastic and have a good arsenal. Lord of Darkness, also features in the range of phase one "skull" speaker. Perhaps Timelord be the first speaker character of home consoles, as in other games The Voice was used to in the third person narration and music.
Power Lords: Power Lords closes with silver key the path of him who was responsible for the success of the console. Despite feeling that the game was stopped halfway (lack a specific goal the game) Power Lords brings many cool things and its gameplay is unique. The animation of the snake is undoubtedly the best console as monkeys in Monkeyshines, you feel that the snake has its own life. A recent list brought the 25 best consoles of all time. The Odyssey appears on this list at the 21st position. Still, the console could indeed have flown higher, without the commitment and creativity of Ed Averett the consolewould never have some recognition. Ed, long fought alone against a gang of Intellivision programmers, an army of Atari programmers, then won the battle. The half-dozen fans thank the Odyssey.
Currently, Ed Averett brought back the big famous console  mascot KC Munchkin (Come-Come for us). The game, which can be seen in www.kcmunchkin.com site is not yet available for the Brazilian market. A new version for Windows 10 will be available soon. Soon we lead our great hero who grew up and is with new powers.

Ed Averett`s games were also for me the beginning for all. My first games (together with my brother) were Space Monster and Satellite Attack. Wonderful christmas days... ( I know till today, that I couldn`t sleep these days)

He was making so wonderful games like PickAxePete, Terrahawks, Freedom Fighters or the amazing Munchkin games. Or his wonderful idea with the highscore:

0000> ?????? 0000

There are also other wonderful Videopac/Odyssey2 programmers like Bob Harris or the guys from GST video. But you are absolute right, when you say, Ed is Odyssey and I don`t want to know, what happend in the past, when Philips wouldn`t have this great programmer. I think, we wouldn`t have so much fun till today.

Even if Philips has now probably forgotten our great Ed, in my heart he will be ever the real WIZARD OF ODYSSEY!

Yes, others programmers had done amazing games, Bob Harris, Jim Butler, Sam Overtom etc. Actually we also have our amazing programmers among which I could not mention René Van den Enden. But the fact is that none of this would exist if it wasnt Ed and we just'd be sad faces with our Ataris 8^P

Yes. Thanks to Ed for over 35 years of flicker free gaming and the lovely "Munchkin", "Come-Come", or like we will know him here in Germany "Supermapfer"!. Ed was making the best Pacman killer and Atari knows that. They failed with his ugly yellow lemon.
We have a friendly looking Munchkin, wonderful ghosts, moving dots, highscore with name and could make our own mazes! And Atari has...... nothing from that!

Oh my god! I wrote my beloved Videopac 38 wrong.

I mean of course SUPERMAMPFER!
